Settling Solid Book 2 eBook Shelley Workinger
If there was one series that I wish more readers knew about, I'd say it was the "Solid" series by Shelley Workinger.I read "Solid" last year and absolutely loved it. Shelley has truly crafted a unique series with "Solid", a story with a fantastic plot and loveable characters. I'm not sure why I waited so long to dive into "Settling", but I'm glad that I finally decided to pick it up earlier this week, because I actually loved it more than the first book.
"Settling" picks up shortly after where "Solid" leaves off. After Clio and her friends stop an attack on campus, life on campus seems to be settling into a sort of normalcy; for a while, at least.
But soon enough, there's an attack on campus that sends their world into another whirlwind. Everyone is worried, but Clio seems the most affected - more on edge than usual. And her uneasiness will lead to her making mistakes that can change everything.
I adore the characters in the "Solid" series, but Clio is my favorite. Some readers may not agree with the turn she takes in "Settling", but I'm glad that Workinger allowed Clio to make mistakes. She's a teenager. She's still adjusting to this new life - she's on her own at a secluded campus, only able to speak to her mother via her cell or Skype, she's just found out that she is one of a hundred children to have been born with a power, and she's found herself in a relationship with a boy that she hardly knows. Of course she's going to question her choices and act out; it's a part of growing up. In actuality, Clio's uncertainty helped to make her more relatable. It allowed me to feel more connected to the story.
I can't wait to see what Workinger has in store for the third book, "Sound". If it is anything like "Solid" and "Settling", I'm sure it will be absolutely fantastic.

Settling Solid Book 2 eBook Shelley Workinger Reviews
It truely helps continue the story of what happens next lol
I was so excited when Settling was released and couldn't wait to see what awaited Clio and her friends after all the twists and turns in Solid! I was very pleasantly surprised to find the mysterious plot turns coninued in this sequel... without giving away too much, I have to say the plotline made for some fantastic suspense and by the time the book had ended I was dying for more!!!
This book is doubly interesting as I have met the author. This is Book #2 and looking forward to Book #3. I believe teens up to maybe 30 will really take to this book and love it. Anyone who has been an "army brat" will surely want to read this also. It is a bit of fantasy mixed with real problems that sets the book off. You will love Clio (Calliope) as I do. Such a smart young lady.
In my review of Shelley Workinger's first book in the Solid series - SOLID - I mentioned that I'd planned to read the second book almost immediately.
I was not disappointed.
Picking up from the end of book one, book two, Settling expands Clio's circle of friends, who have all created internships within their camp, but it also adds some jeopardy - there is a killer attacking staffers and students - and it seems to be one of the kids.
If the first novel was all about self-discovery, this one is much about playing detective, and forming teamwork. But playing against it all are normal teenage relationships, romances gone awry, and a bit more information about the special abilities Clio et al have.
While Settling is very much part of a series, it's enjoyable as a stand-alone novel as well.
I'm looking forward to book three, due out later this year.
Goes well with a fried chicken picnic on the lawn.
While I enjoyed this novel, I have to say that I enjoyed Solid much more. Both stories are very well written, but I felt more kindred with the first book in the series. I think it has something to do with Clio's characterization in this second book in the series. Clio, along with all her camp mates, is struggling as she finds out that there is a killer on the loose. Understandably, they all have their ways of dealing with things, but Clio's withdrawal and actions left me feeling perturbed and angry with her. Yes, she is confused and scared, but a lot of the choices she makes made me livid, whereas I felt that she was a much more rounded character in Solid. Of course, characters need to change--it is human nature for people to morph as they encounter new situations that ultimately change their disposition, and this is so with storybook characters as well, but I can't help disliking Clio a lot in this novel. When I read Solid, I found Clio and I had a lot of similar qualities and I connected to her instantly, but in this sequel, that connection seemed to disappear--which, on a side note, is good, seeing as I don't like a lot of her choices and wouldn't want us to be similar in that aspect. Yet, Clio's changes, mistakes, and realization are all part of the coming-of-age process, and Workinger did do a great job with creating a character that is coming into herself, even if I don't feel the same towards her anymore.
Characterization aside, I think this is a good novel, and I do recommend it; the series is turning out to be pretty good, but make sure to read Solid first, as Settling picks up right were Solid left off. Three stars.
