Fall used to be a time when huge albums by huge artists would be released head to head. Then it was nothing to have Madonna, Jay-Z, Shania Twain and Britney Spears come out with albums the same day and all get great sales.
That competitive spirit has been sucked dry since nobody is selling much of anything these days. This fall, we may see a pseudo battle for sales between current pop queen Britney Spears, and obvious heirs to her throne, Lady GaGa and Rihanna. All ladies have albums dropping Nov 23. So who's going to sell more?
Britney Spears
Why She'll Sell More:
Come on, all jokes aside, this is Britney Spears. She's sold more on one album then Rihanna and Lady GaGa combined in their entire careers. Her track record speaks for itself.
Why She Wont:
Even though first single "3" debuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, this is a Greatest Hits album and those generally don't sell too well, especially when pit against albums with all new material.
Lady GaGa
Why She'll Sell More:
Her star power is shining bright! She just did SNL, performed with Madonna, is in a new video with Beyonce, dropped Kanye from her tour and is still selling tickets. She can't lose, can she?
Why She Wont: Her singles sell, but the album hasn't done too well.
Rihanna
Why She'll Sell More:
Two words, Chris Brown. With pop music, the story sells everything. As horrible as it sounds, Chris Brown actually did Ri Ri a favor by beating her to a pulp, now she has something to talk about. All she has to do is go on Oprah and cry one tear and it's a wrap. This fueled with dark and moody look and music sounds like payday.
Why She Wont:
Her track record isn't too good. While her singles do well, her albums never have connected. Even with a huge hit like "Umbrella," her last album debuted behind T-Pain's with less than 200,000 units sold in the first week and struggled a year or two to go platinum.
What do you think? Who will sell more records Britney Spears, Lady GaGa or Rihanna?
